Wooden patio construction — An outdoor space you'll actually want to use

A beautiful patio completely changes how you live in your home during the summer. Mornings with a coffee, family dinners, evenings with friends — a well-designed outdoor space isn't a luxury. It's an extra room that opens up onto your yard.

But a poorly built patio is another story. Boards that warp after two winters, a structure that shifts, screws that rust and work their way out — bad construction shows itself and makes itself felt quickly.

At Groupe Deluxe, we build residential wooden patios designed to last. Well-anchored, well-finished, built for Quebec's climate — not just beautiful on delivery day, but solid season after season.

Why we build with wood, and not something else

It's a choice we fully stand behind. We work exclusively with wood for patio construction, and it's not for lack of options.

Wood, when it's well-chosen and well-treated, offers something other materials struggle to replicate: a natural, warm look that ages gracefully and blends perfectly with residential architecture here. It's also a material our carpenters know inside out, which translates directly into the quality of the assembly and the durability of the structure.

The wood species we use depending on the need:

  • Pressure-treated lumber — for the structure, posts, and elements in contact with or close to the ground. Resistant to moisture, insects, and rot
  • Western red cedar — for decking surfaces and railings. Naturally resistant, beautiful visual appeal, comfortable underfoot
  • Treated pine or quality fir — for certain secondary structures depending on the design

The choice of wood is discussed with you from the free estimate stage. We explain the benefits of each option based on your budget, the patio's location, and how you plan to use it.

What we build and how

The design

It all starts with a conversation about what you really want. The size, the placement relative to the house, access to existing doors, the presence of stairs, railings, or a shaded area. We take into account your lot, sun exposure, and how you actually use the space.

The foundations — the part nobody sees but that changes everything

This is where many poorly built patios fail after a few years. In Quebec, frost goes deep. If the piles or foundation blocks are poorly positioned or insufficiently anchored, the structure will shift, deform, and create leveling problems.

We install foundations adapted to our region's frost depth — whether that's helical piles, concrete blocks on compacted gravel, or anchored posts depending on the terrain configuration.

The load-bearing structure

Beams, joists, sleepers — everything is sized according to the patio's surface area and the loads it will need to support. We follow the requirements of the Quebec Construction Code for residential deck structures.

The decking and finishes

Installation of deck boards with proper spacing for water drainage. Stainless steel or hidden fasteners depending on the option chosen. Sanding of sharp edges. Finish treatment where applicable based on the wood type.

Stairs, railings, and handrails

If your patio is elevated, stairs and railings are an integral part of the construction — not last-minute additions. We integrate these elements from the design phase so the whole thing is visually cohesive and compliant with applicable safety standards.

What homeowners often regret with other contractors

We see it regularly. Patios built quickly, without a real plan, with untreated or poorly chosen wood. Posts set too shallow that shift at the first thaw. Ordinary steel screws that rust and stain the wood within two seasons.

Or contractors who disappear after delivery and become unreachable the moment a problem comes up.

At Groupe Deluxe, our in-house team does the work — the same people you met during planning. We remain available after delivery, and our work is guaranteed.

Frequently asked questions, wood patio construction

How much does it cost to build a wood patio in Quebec?

The cost varies depending on the size, the height of the structure, the complexity of the design, and the type of wood chosen. For a standard residential patio, prices typically range between $4,000 and $12,000. A patio with stairs, railings, and quality finishes will naturally cost more. A free on-site estimate will give you an exact figure.

How long does a treated wood patio last?

A well-built patio using pressure-treated wood and cedar can easily last 20 to 30 years with minimal maintenance — an annual cleaning and applying oil or a sealer every 2 to 3 years, depending on exposure.

Do you need a permit to build a patio?

In many Quebec municipalities, a building permit is required for raised patios or those exceeding a certain size. We recommend checking with your municipality before starting the work. We can guide you through the process if needed.

What's the best time of year to have a patio built?

Spring is ideal — the ground has thawed, conditions are good for the foundation, and you get to enjoy your patio all summer. Demand picks up quickly in April and May, so the earlier you plan, the better your chances of getting the dates you want.

Do you work with composite or Trex?

No. We work exclusively with wood — mainly pressure-treated wood and cedar. It's our specialty and it's what we do best.

Can you add a patio to an existing home without modifying the house foundation?

Yes, in the vast majority of cases. A freestanding patio sits on its own footings — piers or blocks — without touching the house foundation. The exact configuration depends on the terrain and the required height.
